Organizations in the United States have the highest security budgets, the highest incidence of debilitating security events, and a higher than average proportion of “gray hats”.

Over the past 12 months, organizations in the United States have experienced a slightly higher than average incidence of security problems – 76 percent of US organizations impacted over the last 12 months compared to the global average of 73 percent – but have security budgets far above the global average. US-based organizations are also the most likely to experience a “major” security incident that would cause significant disruption to an organization’s operations. Add to this the fact that a higher proportion of US security staff members will also participate in cybercriminal activity – so-called “Gray Hats” – than the global average. The result is that overall, annual security costs in the United States are significantly higher than the global average of the five nations we surveyed.
